What big part of the story was revealed in chapter 27? How does this help explain some events from earlier chapters?

In Chapter 26, Lolo displays uncharacteristic behavior... wandering away and causing the accident. This chapter precedes the exposure of Lolo's struggle with Alzheimers, which up until now, is kept a secret from Merci.
