What is Dr. Tokai's eventual fate?

The woman with whom Dr. Tokai falls deeply in love is 16 years younger than he is, is married, and has a five-year-old daughter with her husband. Eventually, Dr. Tokai's love for and/or his obsession with his paramour causes him to lose interest in everything but his life, with the exception of his chosen woman. Dr. Tokai's despair becomes complete when she makes off with a great deal of his money before leaving him for a much younger man. At that point, Dr. Tokai stopped eating and eventually, he died of willful starvation ostensibly caused by the extreme nature of his love for the younger married woman.
