In an instance of humor being used by Murakami in order to underscore the narrator's judgmental and willful qualities, the narrator states that "as [his] readers are no doubt aware, affable people like this are most often shallow, mediocre, and boring" (83). The narrator asserts, however, that Dr. Tokai displayed none of these qualities, even though he was a genuinely friendly man.
