One particular scene in the story Yesterday revolves around the idea of language and its role as a marker of socioeconomic status. Kitaru is talking to Erika and Tanimura about the Kansai dialect and he insists that "cultures are all equal" and that "the Tokyo dialect's no better than Kansai" (55). Erika disagrees, pointing out that no one has ever translated Franny and Zooey into the Kansai dialect. Silently, Tanimura agrees with Kitaru, sending the reader the message that the dialect one speaks should not dictate how much power one wields within society.
