Kafuku describes the transformative aspects of acting when he settles down to take a short nap at the end of the story. Just before falling asleep, he thinks about the fact that when he wakes up, he will return to the theater to again pursue his craft. The narrator describes the transformation inherent in the role of actor, stating that acting is "Leaving who one was for a brief time, then returning. But the self that one returned to was never exactly the same as the self that one had left behind" (39).
