In one of the many ways in which the theme of secrecy arises within Murakami's short story collection, the narrator depicts Dr. Tokai as living by a strict "need-to-know" (91) policy when it comes to one of his several girlfriends at a given moment knowing about another woman he was dating at the same time. While Dr. Tokai is depicted as being kind and respectful to the women in his life, the admission that Dr. Tokai had not been completely truthful with the women in his life shows that there is room for interpretation around Dr. Tokai's motivations, scruples, and lack of honesty within his relationships.
