Dr. Tokai and the narrator are having a conversation about the couple of times that Dr. Tokai's complicated love life has gotten him into trouble. Dr. Tokai begins to note that when things get really tricky, his brain kicks in and he is able to extricate himself from the situation. But then when questioned, Dr. Tokai describes himself as "simply a polite, lucky man" (87).
