Murakami uses the interplay between the two friends Tanimura and Kitaru to provide the reader with much information about each of the two characters. First, Kitaru is spontaneous, boisterous, and unconcerned with how he appears to others. On the other hand, Tanimura is depicted as staid, responsible, conventional, and concerned about what others think of him.
