Kafuku adores his Saab, which he had acquired 12 years before the events of the narrative. He had purchased the car new and his wife had picked out its yellow color. Since Kafuku's wife had died ten years prior to the narrative's events, the narrator's descriptions of times he had in the car with his late wife take on particular significance. The narrator describes a number of trips Kafuku and his wife had taken in the car, and then notes that while since his wife's death, Kafuku has dated several women, none of them has ridden in the passenger seat of his Saab. In addition, the narrator notes Kafuku's love of driving with the convertible Saab's top down, stating that "those moments had been a key part of his life for many years" (6).
