At the start of the story "Men Without Women," the narrator receives a phone call around one o'clock in the morning. A man with a deep voice says that his wife had committed suicide the previous Wednesday. The narrator then tells the reader that he had known the woman, and that in fact, she had been the love of his life. He refers to this woman as M, saying that while he had gone out with her for only a couple of years, he wishes that they had met when they were 14 so that they could have been happy together forever.
