The narrator is not surprised when she makes her usual stop at the observatory during her walk and finds that "the Memory Police have done their work" (18). Still, she is once again saddened by the sterile efficiency demonstrated in the actions of the Memory Police. She adds, "Nothing at all remains to remind a visitor that it had once been a place to observe wild birds" (18).
