During one of the after-dinner discussions R and the narrator have together, they talk about R's ability to retain memories of objects that have already been theoretically disappeared from both the island and from inside people's minds. R tells her, "My memories don't feel as though they've been pulled up by the root. Even if they fade, something remains. Like tiny seeds that might germinate again if rain falls" (81).
