Hepburn's mother, also named Katharine, was one of three children in the Houghton family. When she was young her father, Alfred, killed himself, leaving his wife Caroline to care for the three children alone. Soon after Alfred's death, Caroline died and the Houghton children were passed between relatives until Katharine was old enough to take guardianship of her sisters.
