Why does Blix refuse treatment for cancer in the novel, Matchmaking For Beginners?

Blix refuses medical treatment because she doesn't want to be poisoned or cut open with the belief that these acts will make her better. She believes if she cannot get rid of the tumor naturally, then it was intended for her to die as a result of the disease.
