Who is Maria's first student in the play, Master Class?

Sophie de Palma, a soprano, is Maria's first student. When she tries to sing an aria from Bellini's La Sonnambula, Maria immediately interrupts her and tells her that she is not listening to the music; she is singing but not really feeling the emotions of the character.
