How did Twain's theory about an ancient burial ground differ from its legend?

Twain collected bones along with the other tourists from a sandy pit of bones in Chapter Seven. Although the ancient legend claimed that it was a battleground turned into a burial site, Twain thought that it was more likely a graveyard of people that suffered from the plague.
