Who is Zeke from March and what is their importance?

March finds Zeke in the outhouse hole at Oak Landing. He's been thrown into the pit because he killed a hog to feed his children. March is outraged by this inhumane punishment until he later discovers that Zeke's children actually belong to a Southern guerrilla gang..... a gang that robs freed plantations.
