Chapter Nine
When guerrilla fighters first arrived on the plantation, before Canning took it over, they ordered the slaves to burn the cotton that had already been harvested. While most of the harvest was destroyed, the slaves managed to stuff their mattresses with about eight bales of cotton. To show their graciousness to Canning, who kept his word to them, they gift the cotton to him, ensuring that he will have enough financial stability to oversee their work for at least one more year.
