In the novel, March, the author uses the first-person narrative, in which, Mr. March conveys his experiences on the battlefront through letters to his wife. The narrative, thus, is told through the use of letters (written record). The author also utilizes flashback, in addtion to whitewashing.... a term used for a record of events that have been altered to eliminate or cleanse the events... Mr. March leaves out the horrors of the battlefield and concentrates on whatever beauty he can find in the gruesome scenes that surround him. As a result, his recounting of the war is fictional. Alcott was widely criticized for this depiction.
