What metaphors are used in Manhattan Transfer by John Dos Passos?

In Chapter 17, the symbolic skyscraper in Jimmy's imagination is a metaphor of New York City. He can see the attractions within the city, but he can't get in. He also can't imagine leaving the city behind. Thus, he cannot stop circling the skyscraper.
