The third stage of a prisoner's mental reaction came after release. While outsiders might have expected prisoners to be overcome with joy, Frankl writes that they had "literally lost the ability to feel pleased and had to relearn it slowly." Frankl writes that his own new life began several days after release when, walking in a field, he was overcome with emotion and repeated to himself, "I called to the Lord from my narrow prison and He answered me in the freedom of space."
