Morale was low when Frankl spoke to the prisoners about hope because the prisoners were forced to fast for a day because they would not identify the semi-starved prisoner who stole potatoes. Frankl spoke to them about the importance of not losing hope despite a situation that seemed hopeless. He writes that the desperateness of the situation "did not detract from its dignity and its meaning."
