How were prisoners separated when they arrived at Auschwitz?

Frankl writes that men and women left their luggage near the train, and filed, in separate lines, past an SS officer who would indicate which of then would go to the left and which should walk to the right. Those who were sent to the left died in the gas chambers. Those who went to the right were forced to work, and many of them died shortly thereafter as well.
