How did the Capo alter the normal reactions of those prisoners assigned to clean latrines?

Frankl writes of the common practice of assigning new prisoners to clean latrines and "remove the sewage." He writes that when, "as usually happened," some of the excrement splashed on a prisoner's face, if they attempted to wipe their face, the Capo would strike them, so that their normal reactions began to change.
