The second phase of mental reaction to life in the concentration camp was characterized by "relative apathy," in which the prisoners "achieved a kind of emotional death." During this phase, prisoners were able to look at the violence and death they saw all around them without being moved emotionally. This was an important part of their struggle for survival.
