In Chapter 16, Verna shows Jeremy how she cleans up the floor. She tells him what a good boy he is.

In Chapter 17, Jeremy learns how to make his bed as well. Verna tells him making his bed shows self-respect.

In Chapter 18, Verna’s mother encourages her to look for a new job. Verna says that she will continue working for Jolly, but she will still focus on college.

In Chapter 19, Verna grows frustrated with her math homework. She stares at a photograph taped to the ceiling of her with her parents. She remembers how long it has been since they were a happy family. She misses her father.

In Chapter 20, Verna sings Jilly to sleep. Jeremy listens in before getting bored. He leaves Jilly to nap, but he cuts her hair while she sleeps. Verna is horrified when she sees Jilly’s hair and she is so fearful that he could have accidentally hurt his sister. Verna calms down and keeps herself from shouting at Jeremy. She prepares a snack for all of them to enjoy.

In Chapter 21, Jolly asks Verna about her father who was accidentally shot during a basketball game by gang members. Verna does not want to tell the whole story, so she just says that he died when she was younger.

In Chapter 22, Jolly comes home after losing her job. Her boss sexually assaulted her, and she fought back. Verna encourages Jolly to report him.
