What does Maizy learn over the course of the novel, Maizy Chen’s Last Chance?

When Maizy leaves Last Chance with her mother at the end of the story, she leaves knowing more about the history of her ancestors. She understands her mother more because she can see what her mother’s dream is. She understands herself more because she understands where she came from. She has developed close relationships with people in Last Chance, and she has learned that it is important not to judge people based on their appearances.
