Macbeth is violent for several reasons. First, he is naturally prone to violence as a battle-scarred warrior. Secondly, and possibly more importantly, he's violent because he's afraid. He's afraid that he won't fulfill the prophecy, and then he's afraid that he won't hold on to the Kingship. He is completely ambitious and this fuels his need to be violent.
