Why are Manawydan, Rhiannon, Pryderi and Cigfa forced to live off the land in the tale, Manawydan son of Llyr?

During the time that Manawydan, Rhiannon, Pryderi and Cigfa reign over Dyfed, all humans and domestic animals vanish from their kingdom. As a result, all four are forced to live off the land.
