Gallimard worships the romance involved with Puccini's story: Butterfly serving and loving her man unconditionally. Gallimard hopes to obtain this in his own life. Even though he knows Song is devoted to him, he needs her to say it, forces her to say it even, so he can establish that last ounce of dominance over her.
