During his tenure in China and his courtship of Song, Gallimard discovers his masculinity. In finding a subservient woman, everything else falls into place for Gallimard: he is happy, confident, and his job improves. Gallimard makes Biblical references to God preferring man over woman in his grand design, and he sees it as true in his own life. He sees God as being fraternal rather than paternal; cutting him a break rather than doling out rules and regulations. In short, God has joined Gallimard's boy's club.
