At the end of the opera, Butterfly states that "Death with honor/Is better than life/Life with dishonor." What does she mean and why does she say it?

Butterfly sees that despite her hard work and loyalty to her husband, years of waiting and a child, Pinkerton has remarried and come to China not to take care of his family there, but to claim his baby and abandon Butterfly. Butterfly does not want to live with the heartbreak and dishonor of what she perceives as her failure as a wife and waste of her love.
