In the book Lyddie written by Katherine Paterson, why does Diana laugh when Lyddie told her why she was dismissed?

Diana laughs because the reason for Lyddie's dismissal was a complete fabrication. Lyddie was dismissed for "moral turpitude", which means vile or depraved behavior.
