Why does Valora wish she looked more like her mother in the novel, Luck of the Titanic?

Valora is the daughter of a Chinese father and a British mother and Jamie's twin sister. She has Chinese facial features and often wishes she looked more like her mother because of the anti-Chinese sentiment in this era.
