Martha’s notebooks from Spain are symbolic of how Martha learns from the past. Because Martha is unable to write the book she has planned about her time in Spain because Ernest is working on a book about the same time, Martha learns that she must look ahead to the next experience, or story, to fulfill her pursuit as a writer.
