Although the poem isn’t tied to a particular time period or geographical location, its visual image implies the narrative to be set within the home. However, this “home” could also be a state of being, or an internal space within the mind. Phrases such as “at your own door, in your own mirror” (Line 4) evoke a personal setting, while the description of a dinner table cements the poem indoors. There are also mentions of a bookshelf, photographs and notes on the walls. All of these create the sense of a very intimate space in which the reader has lived and found comfort during times of crisis, and which now they can reclaim as they move forward from grief.
