Who is Charles from Love, Stargirl and what is their importance?

Charles is the man who sits by his wife's tombstone everyday at the city cemetery. Stargirl is somewhat obsessed with the love this man must have for his wife, and his seeming inability to go back into his house. It is as if the man cannot imagine living without his wife, the woman he loves, a concept that is very interesting to Stargirl.
