It is interesting that Golding's classic still works as a parable of our times 71 years after its publication. Humanity really has not changed that much. The fact that this novel is still studied in countless of school classrooms today is a testament to its relevant themes and characters. The world is perhaps in more peril than when Golding wrote this book. Perhaps he was correct about humanity being inherently defective.
