Describe the conversation between the beggar and Covenant in the opening pages of the novel, Lord Foul’s Bane?

In the opening pages, the beggar asks Covenant for something, but Covenant doesn't respond, thinking to himself that he doesn't owe the man anything. The beggar then says that Covenant has been warned. For whatever reason Covenant takes off his wedding band that he has refused to do without and puts it in the cup. The old man tells Covenant that he will need the ring and gives it back.
