How does Will describe the sadness of losing someone you love in Chapter One?

In Chapter One, Will describes the sadness of losing someone you love is like waking up and having someone forcibly pull a molar tooth out of the back of your mouth. He says the worst part of this is the tongue going back to the missing space over and over even though you know it is not there any more.
