Who normally held a crossing sweep position and how was that job viewed? How did the crossing sweep have to eat sometimes?

Many crossing sweeps were elderly or unable to work due to asthma, arthritis or an injury in the workplace. It was a job of last resort, and many lived on table scraps from the residents.
