Gangs of youths, usually boys, often combined tumbling and street sweeping. They would run alongside a city bus, entertaining riders with somersaults, back-flips, handstands and cartwheels in return for tips when the passengers got off. Others also worked as musicians, porters, shoeshine boys or were paid by shop owners to tack up advertisements.
