The war on drugs is discussed in the first chapter. In this chapter, the author notes that black activists saw marijuana as a gateway to the heroin that was responsible for a huge negative impact on the black community. He talks about the history of heroin and its destructive influence on lives; the moral, social, and economic destruction that heroin addiction was directly responsible for in their communities. As a result, a large number of black activists pushed for stronger drug laws.... they didn't want recreational drugs in their community..... nor, did they want the use of those drugs to escalate and include other, more dangerous, substances.
