Why does Mr. Big have so much influence in Harlem's African American community in in the novel, Live and Let Die?

Mr. Big runs an underground voodoo temple in Harlem and there is a popular rumor that he is a zombie, the living corpse of Baron Semedi, the Prince of Darkness. Because of this, he is feared and respected throughout the African-American community.
