Time is an important motif in the novel to the extent that it acts as a plot device, dictating how the novel unfolds. Time inhibits Tom and Elizabeth from being together as each age brings a fresh slew of obstacles for them. The more time that passes, the more difficult it becomes for Elizabeth and Tom to connect.
