The Duck Pond symbolizes the gray area, or the space in between the Richardson house up on Parkland Drive and the rental house down on Winslow Road. It is a place signified by indecision, confusion, and the undeveloped identity wavering between values, belief systems, and a sense of place. The duck pond is described to be filled with no ducks, only geese that "ducked their heads underwater for weeds, wholly unruffled by the commotion" (2). The geese are "wholly unruffled" because they do not belong with either side. The gray area is just as much a conflicted area as it is a neutral one.
