What does the sport of football represent to both Todd and Larry in the novel, Little Children?

Todd and Larry's involvement in the Guardians symbolizes for both men the need to be valued, something neither man receives at home. On the football field, Todd and Larry are necessary to the team. They are valued, trusted, and counted on. In both Todd and Larry's home lives, none of that is true.
