The Need for order is a recurring idea. It's noted that the Navajo people are not prone to trying to change their environment to suit their needs, but tend to take note of the environment and then to find order within it to live peacefully. This need for order is a major part of Joe Leaphorn's makeup and the reason that he continues to worry specific points that eventually lead him to solve the case. Leaphorn finds this need for order to be sometimes distracting, but this is an ingrained part of his makeup and something that seems necessary for him as an officer and a member of the Navajo tribe.
