How does Begay escape Begay in the novel, Listening Woman?

Unwilling to put Begay in danger as the two men approach the Mercedes, Leaphorn decides to uncuff him. However, as soon as Leaphorn's back is turned, Begay makes his escape. Leaphorn calls after him, but notes that Begay is probably laughing too hard to answer.
