The novel is set in 1963, at a time when language was slightly different than modern English. Many of the characters speak slightly more formally and children typically address older people as “sir” or “ma'am.” The main characters of this novel are members of the Ojibwe tribe or are connected to members of that tribe. The native language of the tribe appears in some passages and is important to the elders of the tribe. Grandma Dilsey is one of those and she feels the traditions of the tribe is dying out as young people take less interest. The language is one symbol of that and Dilsey and a few others use the language, often interpreting for those who cannot understand. When Dilsey is talking with Liam, Colleen, and Cork about the investigation into Louise's death, Liam mentions Moose Lake and Dilsey corrects him, saying “Naabe-Mooz,” which is the Ojibwemowin name for the lake.
